I am currently negotiating on this e30. Its showing 150k miles although that may not be actual. he claims minor rust on the drivers side fenders and that the car wont idle or acclerate smoothly, likely due to a worn out hose or intake boot. also the interior is pretty thrashed. What do yall think?

Pretty nice price, at least a good point to haggle from.

I don't worry too much about interiors when looking at cars like this, but you'll have to do a fair bit of mechanical work. That does mean you can probably talk him down.

How much would fixing the vacuum leak run you? I say keep looking.

I used to want one of these, in the lowest model possible, wheel covers and everything. Then do a full swap and put an LS under the hood.

Of the three E30's I had, the 91 318i was my favorite. Mine was basically this exact same car, but one that lived a CO life. Tons of fun as a DD or for project, and that M42 motor is awesome. Not much power at all, but it likes to rev sort of high and is a blast to drive around. Mine was totally stock, had seat covers also, roof rack and mudflaps, upgraded the lights and radio, usual E30 stuff but basically stock in regard to engine suspension. Check and see if it has an LSD. Mind did and was essential for snow, along with proper tires, but in GA I'm not sure how much it will matter. Super easy to work on, that vacuum issue should be a snap to sort out. Since the tranny is new, your probably might want to make sure fluids are good and your timing chain tensioner is good, then the car should be good for another long while. I sold mind for $4200 when I went for my E46 wagon - but wish I would have kept it as a toy every time I see an E30. Go for it!

NP all day, check if he knows it's a vacuum leak for sure, that sounds like it's just the AFM making it idle funny, easy to fix. If he doesn't know, buy it. If it's definitely vacuum, check bimmerforums and see how easy it is to fix yourself. My friend has a 318is and is less mechanically inclined than me, still does all his own work on it.

"Would make a great project, chump, or commuter car. "
The classified called you a chump, time to move on...

Dude, run away unless you know a lot about fixing old BMWs.
I got a similar "deal" on an E34 and ended up spending thousands of dollars more than if I'd just held out for a perfect one.

That's how much I got mine for. It's not too bad of a price, and the seller does say OBO so you can negotiate. Mine didn't have any issues besides the speedometer not working and rust, both which are common symptoms of used E30s. I'd say check it out yourself, the driving experience is what sealed the deal for me.

wound up talking him down to $1100 because of a cracked windsheild, non functioning sunroof, rust around the rockers and trunk pockets, no idle because of a vaccum leak and gross paint. So far i have purchased $250 in parts to deal with the engine and replace a driveshaft bearing as well as new water pump and thermostat for reliabiity reasons. the body work is what really scares me...

Awesome. I have a lot of body work/rust patching to do on mine right now after this insane winter, and I didn't even drive it that much...
